WHAT IS AN APOSTILLE ?

An apostille is a seal used to certify that an official document is an authentic copy.

Not all countries can issue apostille, but only the countries who had signed the Convention Abolishing The Requirement Of Legalisation For Foreign Public Documents (concluded 5 October 1961; entered into force 24 January 1965). These countries designates an authority that can issue apostilles. There are currently 87 States party to the Apostille Convention. Find out if your country is a signatory of this Convention.

If the country where the document will be used is not a party to the Convention, you will have to begin the cumbersome, time-consuming process of obtaining a series of certifications known as the "legalisation".

If your country is a signatory of Hague protocol, the Swiss banks will ONLY accept apostilled documents, for proof of identity and no other form of authentication is acceptable (a notarised copy of your passport is unacceptable). The most important thing is to always make sure the seal says APOSTILLE.

The effects of an Apostille
The only effect of an Apostille is to certify the authenticity of the signature, the capacity in which the person signing the document has acted, and where appropriate, the identity of the seal or stamp which the document bears. The Apostille does not relate to the content of the underlying document itself (i.e., the apostillised document).

Who may issue an Apostille and how to assess the origin of an Apostille?
Apostilles may only be issued by a Competent Authority designated by the State from which the public document emanates.

We will be happy to provide you with a list of Competent Authorities who can issue an Apostille in your country. For more information, please contact us.
